Environmental advocate defeats oil and natural gas executive in redrawn Texas House district
Gutierrez overcame a fundraising deficit and low name recognition as Republicans redrew the district to favor conservatives.
On Tuesday, Democrat Leticia Gutierrez won Texas' 9th Congressional District race, leading Republican Alex Mealer with 57.8% of the vote according to early results from the Associated Press; Mealer conceded the contest.
Texas House Republicans redrew the 9th Congressional District in 2025 to tilt the area toward the GOP, leaving only 3% of constituents from the previous boundaries where Democratic Congressman Al Green had represented the seat for more than 20 years.
Despite Mealer's financial advantage of more than $2 million and an endorsement from President Donald Trump, Gutierrez prevailed; Mealer, a combat veteran, had previously lost the Harris County Judge race by about 16,000 votes in 2022.
Gutierrez targeted Magnolia Park and Houston's East End to energize Latino voters, focusing on immigration rights and local concerns after excessive force allegations against immigration officers became a campaign flashpoint.
Political analyst Mark Jones of Rice University's Baker Institute had considered this district a 'safer bet' for Republicans among five redrawn seats, making Gutierrez's victory a significant challenge to GOP redistricting expectations.
