ENS Seeks Approval for Major .Eth Domain Upgrade
The proposal would move new .eth registrations to ENSv2 and keep existing names active as ENS Labs hands control to the DAO.
Ethereum Name Service founder Nick Johnson submitted a draft proposal to activate ENSv2 on the Ethereum mainnet, requiring DAO approval before the protocol upgrade can proceed.
Under ENS governance rules, executable proposals require at least 1% voter participation, representing 1 million ENS votes, and majority approval during a seven-day voting period; if approved, a two-day timelock precedes execution.
The upgrade introduces a redesigned registry architecture, freezing new registrations on the original ENS registrar while allowing existing domain holders to continue renewing names; new.eth registrations will move to the upgraded system after synchronization.
Existing domain holders are not required to migrate, and their names continue functioning normally, while ENS Labs plans to transfer its remaining administrative control over the upgraded contracts to the DAO after activation.
Johnson warned that new registrations will be temporarily unavailable on either version during the transition, and a voting date for the activation proposal has not yet been announced.
Key news points: ENS asks its DAO to approve ENSv2 on Ethereum mainnet, freezing new v1 records while maintaining existing renewals and property rights. ENSv2 replaces flat registration with hierarchical records, flexible permissions for subnames and customizable resolves, while holders will be able to migrate whenever they want. If approved, activation will advance ... Read more
