Djed Spence to Wear Protective Mask at World Cup Due to Broken Jaw
Spence said the jaw injury will take three months to heal, forcing him to wear the mask throughout the tournament.
England defender Djed Spence will wear a protective mask throughout the World Cup after suffering a broken jaw in a Premier League collision with Chelsea striker Liam Delap last month.
The fracture occurred in a 'crazy challenge' by Delap and requires three months to fully heal, though Spence acknowledged, "It's a little bit uncomfortable but it is what it is."
Despite a difficult campaign at Tottenham, Thomas Tuchel selected the 25-year-old for the England squad, with Spence stating, "Luckily I play football with my feet and not my jaw."
The England squad includes Arsenal players Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze; when asked about 'locked up' social media jokes, Spence said, "No, no jokes."
England continues preparations in Orlando on Wednesday with a match against Costa Rica before the World Cup opener against Croatia on June 17, with Spence focused on the tournament.
