This El Niño Is Set to Be the Largest on Record by a ‘Mind-Blowing Margin’
NOAA said the Pacific warming pattern has a four in five chance of becoming very strong and lasting until at least April 2027.
Researchers said today that the ENSO climate pattern strengthening in the Pacific Ocean is on track to be the largest in at least 150 years, with The NOAA anticipating a "very strong" event by year's end.
Historically, the Southern Oscillation swings between hot and cool phases every two to seven years, though this year's event emerged in June as a natural fluctuation in Pacific sea surface temperature and winds.
Zeke Hausfather of Berkeley Earth compared 14 climate models, showing the median estimate for peak Pacific sea surface temperature is about 0.8°C higher than the record set in 2015-16, calling the margin "truly, a mind-blowing margin."
Justin Mankin of Dartmouth College said the event could cause "$10 trillion in economic losses by 2032," while the pattern threatens to stress ecosystems and oceans, potentially driving declines in carbon uptake.
Projections suggest it is "not outside the realm of possibility" that the event could combine with climate change to raise global average temperatures in 2027 as high as 1.7°C above the pre-industrial average.
Having surpassed the strong El Niño of 2023, the El Niño of 2026 is predicted to continue to grow, becoming super-strong. Kalimantan is most susceptible to the impacts of drought.
