The cabinet hopes to bring the trade unions and employers' organizations to the table in this way.
While unions are preparing for strikes, the business community is calling for calm. Coen van Oostrom, the newly appointed chairman of VNO-NCW, wants the cabinet to take the increase in the retirement age off the table and put the cuts to unemployment benefits (WW) and disability benefits (WIA) on hold. "I hope for a broad agreement, still this summer, in which the growth of our economy takes center stage."
The cabinet is under enormous pressure to scrap the proposed cuts to social security. Following the trade union movement, employers' organization VNO-NCW now also believes that the current plans must be abandoned. As a result, the cabinet is left with almost no options.
