The former Bronx congressman served 16 terms and led the House Foreign Affairs Committee, his family said.

  • Former New York Congressman Eliot Engel died Friday, his family confirmed in a statement. He represented parts of the Bronx and Westchester County during 16 terms in the House of Representatives from 1989 through 2021.
  • Before his federal career, Engel served in the New York State Assembly for over 10 years. His family noted he died peacefully in "the borough that raised him: The Bronx."
  • As Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Engel championed international security. U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres called him "a giant of New York politics."
  • Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins stated Engel's legacy is "one of commitment, conviction and service." He was also a "fierce advocate" for Kosovo and the Albanian community.
  • Engel was first elected to Congress in 1988 but lost his seat in the 2020 Democratic primary to Jamaal Bowman. His family said he dedicated "over 44 years" to public service.
