Élections Québec Says It Will Send Out Voting Information in French Only
The agency will include a QR code for English online access, while Indigenous voters and eligible English-instruction recipients may request English documents.
On Tuesday, the provincial elections agency announced voter information documents for the Oct. 5 general election will be mailed in French only, marking the first time in a general election this policy applies.
Citing the 2022 Legislation and Bill 96, which revised the Charter of the French Language, the agency noted it must make French the sole language of communication for public institutions.
While mailings are French only, documents will include a QR code for English-language access; Indigenous voters and those eligible for English instructions must contact the agency to request specific documents.
Voters should receive election guides and notice of entry by the week of Sept. 14, with Reminder cards mailed the week of Sept. 28 ahead of the Oct. 5 election.
In previous elections, voter information cards were printed in both English and French, but this year's change reflects the government's mandate to prioritize the French Language across public services.
