- On Tuesday, Maine voters approved a Red Flag Law allowing family and household members to petition courts to remove weapons, passing 63% to 37% roughly two years after the Lewiston shooting.
- On October 25, 2023 a gunman killed 18 people in Lewiston, and a state commission found the Yellow Flag Law could have removed Robert Card's weapons but was not used.
- A judge must hold a hearing within 14 days, and if an extreme risk protection order is approved, weapons are surrendered and barred for up to one year, law enforcement may seek search orders.
- After the vote, supporters and officials said Gov. Janet Mills will work with law enforcement to implement the law, while David Trahan and opposition committees plan to explore legal challenges Wednesday.
- Supporters say the law will help prevent suicides amid more than 1,000 orders completed since Oct. 25, 2023, compared with 80 before, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
