Elder Abuse Incidents Increasing in B.C., Senior’s Advocate Says
Calls to the Seniors Abuse and Information Line rose 39% over six years as reports of abuse and neglect continued to climb, officials said.
- On Monday, June 15, communities marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, designated by The United Nations in 2011 to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect affecting older adults.
- Data from The Office of the Seniors Advocate shows total calls to the Seniors Abuse and Information Line rose 39 per cent over the past six years, with calls specifically reporting abuse increasing 71 per cent.
- Violent offences against seniors reported to the RCMP increased 29 per cent, while cases of abuse, neglect, and self-neglect rose 16 per cent, totaling 2,267 incidents.
- Sharon Blakeborough, an elder who fell victim to an online romance scam, said she lost over $60,000 and suffered a heart attack, noting that financial abuse often involves strangers using sophisticated technology.
- Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt urged those concerned about mistreatment to contact the Seniors Abuse and Information Line or local Community Response Network, as many incidents remain unreported due to embarrassment.
