Weak Monsoon Due to El Nino Brings 43% Less Rain to India
Officials are preparing contingency plans for 315 districts as rainfall stays 43% below normal and weak monsoon conditions threaten Kharif crops and fodder supply.
On Tuesday, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan identified 111 high-priority districts across 12 States facing severe irrigation shortages due to a 43% monsoon rainfall deficit.
The Centre assessed 315 districts as vulnerable as the monsoon remains stalled, driven by El Niño weather patterns that delayed rainfall since mid-June.
Chouhan confirmed ICAR and the ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture prepared District Agriculture Contingency Plans incorporating alternative crop strategies and water management measures.
Officials established a Monitoring Cell and a Crop Weather Watch Group to track crop conditions, input supplies, and market signals, with reviews conducted weekly at the secretary level.
Forecasts indicate rainfall will remain weak through July 2, though The Agriculture Ministry maintains that seed and fertilizer stocks are adequate to safeguard farmers.
