- On Thursday, March 27, Irvine police responded to a home on Heathergreen and Weepingwood around 2:42 p.m. After receiving a report of a juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound, where they found an injured eighth-grade boy who attended Southlake Middle School.
- The incident occurred when the boy, who did not live at the home but was visiting a friend, came in contact with an unsecured firearm in a bedroom, which then went off.
- Despite life-saving measures, the boy died shortly after the incident from what detectives believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though it remains under investigation whether the injury was intentional or accidental.
- 56-Year-Old Christian Douglas Yeager was arrested Thursday night and booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of child endangerment and criminal storage of a firearm, as detectives found multiple unsecured firearms in the room and the boys were aware of the weapons in the bedroom.
- Following the incident, law enforcement is working with the Irvine Unified School District to offer support services for students and staff at Southlake Middle School, and the Irvine Police Department reminds residents to learn about firearm safety and offers complimentary gun locks.
