Eight men accused of being part of grooming gang charged over rape and child sexual abuse
The Crown Prosecution Service authorized 34 charges, including 17 counts of rape, in a long-running investigation into alleged abuse of eight children.
Eight men aged 54 to 73 have been charged with 34 offences, including 17 counts of rape, following Gwent Police's Operation Oak investigation into child sexual abuse alleged between 1985 and 1996. Detectives executed a targeted operation yesterday across Newport, Swansea, London, Birmingham, Lancashire, Edinburgh, and Argyll and Bute.
Operation Oak began investigating reports from multiple women of sexual abuse committed against them as children between 1985 and 1996. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charges after determining sufficient evidence existed and prosecution was in the public interest.
Shafaq Mohammed, 58, of Birmingham faces 11 offences including four counts of rape of a female under 16, while Mohammed Sheikh Abdul Hannan, 54, of Edinburgh is charged with eight offences including rape and aiding and abetting rape. Six other defendants face between one and four counts each.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Jenny Hopkins said prosecutors concluded there was sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and it was in the public interest to pursue proceedings. Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Tuck emphasised victim support remained central, with specialist agencies continuing to provide ongoing assistance.
Hopkins cautioned that "It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings." Police urged anyone with abuse concerns to contact 101 or 999 for reporting.
