Endangered Lion Cubs Born at Edinburgh Zoo for First Time in Seven Years
The endangered cubs were born to first-time mum Bindee as keepers monitor the family and keep them out of public view.
On Thursday, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland announced that Edinburgh Zoo welcomed two Asiatic lion cubs born October 11, marking the first new arrivals of the endangered species in seven years.
The father is 15-year-old Jayendra, known as 'Jay,' and mother is 10-year-old Bindee, whose pregnancy keepers confirmed after observing her enlarged stomach and slower movements throughout the summer.
RZSS animal team leader Alison MacLean said, 'We are so proud of Bindee and Jay and absolutely thrilled with the beautiful new arrivals.' The lion habitat remains closed to the public during bonding.
Asiatic lions are classified as endangered, with only about 600 remaining in the wild and found exclusively in the Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat, India, making these births significant for conservation.
The cubs will remain out of public view for several months while staff at the conservation charity monitor their development, with the zoo providing updates on habitat reopening when information becomes available.
