Chevy with 3 Engine Failures to Start Indy 500 Practice
Three Chevy-powered cars changed engines this week, and the parts were sent to Detroit for inspection before qualifying and the Indianapolis 500.
Chevrolet has replaced three engines for its IndyCar teams within the first two days of Indianapolis 500 practice, affecting drivers Alexander Rossi, Ed Carpenter, and Scott McLaughlin at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
A Chevrolet spokesperson said the company has no root cause and is still investigating, noting each replaced engine was sent back to Detroit for inspection and the swaps were "not the same issue."
Driver Alexander Rossi expressed concern Thursday morning, stating "I am concerned," while Arrow McLaren's Ryan Hunter-Reay suggested some replacements involved "mileaeged-out engines" requiring routine maintenance.
Rossi returned to the track Thursday and was the busiest driver, turning 68 laps and posting the fifth-fastest lap at 226.364 mph despite the mechanical setback.
Responsible for 18 of the 33 engines in the race, Chevrolet has won the Indianapolis 500 six times since 2012, while Honda has won eight as teams prepare for the sold-out race on May 24.
