West Africa: Osinbajo Leads Ecowas Election Observation Mission to Côte d'Ivoire
Professor Yemi Osinbajo will lead a team to monitor Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential election, aiming to ensure peace and transparency in line with ECOWAS’s governance goals.
- On Sunday, the Economic Community of West African States appointed Professor Yemi Osinbajo, former Vice President of Nigeria, to lead its Election Observation Mission to Côte d’Ivoire from October 19 to 29, 2025, ahead of the October 25, 2025 vote.
- ECOWAS has long used observer missions to support good governance and prevent electoral violence, drawing on experience in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, ECOWAS said.
- The observation team will consist of political figures, electoral experts and representatives of civil society who will assess the electoral environment, pre-election preparations and conduct of polls.
- As head of mission, Osinbajo will engage stakeholders to help ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible poll as several member states prepare national polls.
- Deployed under the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol, the mission follows ECOWAS guidelines and involves international and domestic observer groups to promote peace and stability.
