ECI Reserves TMC Symbol Amid Dispute; Asks Mamata, Ritabrata Factions to Pick New Names, Symbols Ahead of Bypolls
The poll body will hear rival Trinamool groups over claims to the party name, symbol and funds as bypoll nominations have closed, officials said.
- On Thursday, The Election Commission will hold hearings for both Trinamool Congress factions, led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, over their dispute on the party's name and election symbol.
- Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee leads nearly 65 of the 80 Trinamool MLAs who distanced themselves from Mamata after the party's defeat to the BJP in April. The split created competing claims to party legitimacy and resources.
- During a Saturday meeting, the Ritabrata faction submitted documentation to The Election Commission alleging anomalies in records held by the Mamata-led grouping. Both sides claim to be the "real" Trinamool Congress.
- Ahead of the October 6 bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar, the nomination process closed on Wednesday with both factions fielding candidates despite the unresolved leadership dispute.
- Rebel Trinamool Congress spokesperson Riju Dutta expressed optimism about securing the party symbol, alleging that candidates face attacks and false police cases while calling for a "level playing field.
