Ebola: Kenya confirms eighth case as DRC outbreak reaches new province
The latest patient is a 49-year-old man in quarantine, while 128 contacts remain under monitoring as the outbreak expands in Congo.
On Sunday, Kenyan authorities detected an eighth Ebola case while the outbreak simultaneously reached the eighth province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nord-Ubangi, officials reported.
This epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a distinct strain that lacks licensed vaccines or specific treatments, complicating containment efforts compared to previous Ebola outbreaks.
Amid a broader funding dispute, Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya noted that $700 million remains unaccounted for out of $962 million disbursed by international donors.
The United States imposed travel restrictions requiring 21 days outside the DRC before entry, while Tanzania and Uganda tightened border screening and monitoring protocols.
Although not yet matching the 11,000 deaths from the 2014 West African epidemic, this crisis is spreading at a far greater speed, with 9,455 cases reported to date.
