EasyJet warned over 'misleading' £5.99 cabin bag fee
The ASA banned easyJet's 'from £5.99' cabin bag claim after a Which? probe found prices averaged £30 across 520 flights and were never as low as advertised.
- The Advertising Standards Authority banned EasyJet from claiming adding a large cabin bag costs "from £5.99" in marketing and ordered future prices to reflect the lowest cost across many flights.
- Which? found none of the 520 flights offered the £5.99 cabin bag rate, with the lowest charge at £23.49 and an average of £30.
- Responding to the complaint, easyJet said `We always aim to provide clear information to our customers on pricing, and the purpose of this page was to display factual information on fees and charges to customers`, but it could not provide evidence that the £5.99 price was widely obtainable.
- The airline's website now states fees vary with demand, route, flight date and time of booking, and customers see the exact price at purchase after updates following ASA feedback.
- Analysts and consumer groups warn investigations show low-cost airlines use low headline fares then add high baggage charges, with large cabin bags becoming a growing revenue source for the sector.
