Earthquake Swarm Centered Near San Ramon Shakes Bay Area
At least 19 quakes struck near San Ramon in about 90 minutes, including a 4.2 magnitude event felt across the Bay Area, with 4,000 people reporting shaking to USGS.
- On Monday morning the United States Geological Survey reported a swarm of 17 earthquakes near San Ramon between 6:27 a.m. and 7:42 a.m., with the strongest measuring magnitude 4.2 shortly after 7 a.m. about two-and-a-half miles southeast at nearly six miles depth.
- Since Dec. 1, 2025, data show roughly 300 quakes near San Ramon likely originated along the creeping Calaveras Fault, which causes swarm behavior by releasing stress in many small quakes.
- Shaking reached more than 30 miles away in San Francisco and East Bay cities, around 4,000 people reported feeling it to the USGS, and BART slowed trains causing delays up to 20 minutes.
- Seismology experts say smaller quakes don’t generally signal a Big One, and USGS reports less than a 6% chance of a larger quake next week, with about an 11% chance of a bigger quake by 2033.
- Scientists say there are no strict parameters for when swarms begin or end, so USGS continues monitoring after 91 quakes since Nov. 9 and a two-week gap suggested activity might be over.
