- Kamchatka Peninsula lies where the Pacific and North American plates converge, and Wednesday’s quake was the strongest since 1952, with aftershocks up to magnitude 7.5, according to the regional seismic monitoring service.
- Chip McCreery said, `water levels were dropping to a below-normal sea level` at 7:30 p.m., with water ebbing and flowing in Hilo Bay, Hanalei Bay, and Haleiwa Boat Harbor.
- By Wednesday afternoon, evacuation orders were lifted in Hawaii after waves of up to 1.7 metres hit, with warnings downgraded soon after, authorities reported no fatalities or major injuries.
- Officials cautioned that the tsunami warning had not been fully lifted and monitoring for potential flooding continues, with Japan’s Meteorological Agency urging stay alert for at least another 24 hours.
