Eagle rescued in Cariboo after caught hanging from tree
Local volunteers carefully cut the tree's top to free the eagle, which was hanging overnight with an injured leg, before transferring it to wildlife rehabilitation experts.
- On Thursday, Aug. 21, a team of community members in Lac la Hache freed an eagle that had become ensnared by its leg in a tree.
- The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society contacted Todd McQueen’s crew Wednesday evening to arrange the rescue as it was unsafe to attempt it that night.
- The team crossed the lake by boat the next morning, found the eagle hanging from a dying tree with a likely broken leg, and carefully cut and lowered the top of the tree to free it.
- Todd McQueen explained that the eagle's foot had become entangled and wrapped around a branch, noting that it was the nearest he had ever been to a wild bird. Meanwhile, Rob Hope expressed appreciation for the way people united to assist in the situation.
- The eagle was still alive after the rescue, was calmed down by the crew, and was transported by volunteer Sue Burton to Delta for rehabilitation by OWL.
