Argentina's Milei Escalates Falklands Dispute, Seizing on Trump Comments and Oil Tensions

On Thursday, Argentine President Javier Milei announced plans to tighten sanctions on companies involved in oil projects near the Falkland Islands and send Congress a "national sovereignty defense" bill to strengthen penalties for unauthorized operations.
Milei declared the Sea Lion offshore oil project, operated by Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration, a "clear and present danger" to Argentine interests, with development potentially beginning in the coming months.
The government plans a decree to accelerate penalties against companies, shareholders, and suppliers involved in extraction, while establishing a new naval base in Tierra del Fuego to strengthen southern defense resources.
These measures follow President Donald Trump hinting the U.S. might not assist Britain in a future conflict, claiming the country was "not there to help me" during previous engagements.
While Downing Street maintains its position is "long-standing and unwavering," Milei rejected the islanders' right to self-determination, despite 99.8% of Falkland Islanders voting in a 2013 referendum to remain a British overseas territory.
