DWP debt crackdown begins with new bank account powers and driving bans
The DWP says the new powers target people who can repay but refuse, while Money Wellness warns vulnerable claimants may be wrongly caught.
The Government introduced new powers under the Public Authorities Act last month, allowing the DWP to recover benefit debts directly from bank accounts, with enforcement beginning in October 2026.
These measures form part of a government plan to save £14.6 billion over five years by tackling fraud and error, as DWP figures show around £900 million of £6.35 billion in Universal Credit overpayments resulted from official error rather than fraud.
Pensions Minister Andrew Western said, "Hardworking taxpayers deserve a system that pursues those who deliberately dodge their debts," while the DWP confirmed people agreeing affordable repayment plans can avoid enforcement action.
Money Wellness External Relations Manager Rebecca Lamb warned that vulnerable people could be mistaken for those refusing to engage, noting that complex benefit rules often lead to genuine mistakes rather than deliberate avoidance.
The DWP advises anyone receiving a debt recovery letter to contact the department immediately to avoid enforcement; Money Wellness encourages those struggling with debt to seek free independent advice as soon as possible.
