DUP MP Defends Photo with Masked Men at Scarva Protest
Lockhart said she was helping keep calm as police enforced parade conditions and hundreds gathered for a counter-demonstration.
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart rejected criticism on Sunday regarding her attendance at Saturday's counter-protest in Scarva, stating she will "never apologise for standing with my community."
Around 1,500 pro-Palestine marchers walked from Lurgan to Newry on Saturday, encountering a counter-protest organized against the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign as police enforced Parades Commission conditions.
Political leaders, including SDLP leader Claire Hanna and South Down MP Chris Hazzard, criticized images showing Lockhart with masked men; Hanna called the scenes "bleak and disturbing."
Lockhart responded to criticism from Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood and Hazzard by labeling them "absentee" MPs, claiming she stepped in to assist constituents including the family of murder victim William Heenan.
DUP representatives engaged with senior police officers throughout the day, while the PSNI described their operation as "appropriate and proportionate." Lockhart criticized the heavy police presence for causing local disruption.
