Dulwich private school fined £80K after ceiling fell onto children
- The Thurlow Educational Trust has been fined £80,000 and ordered to pay £7,116.31 in costs after a classroom ceiling collapsed onto 15 children and their teacher at Rosemead Preparatory School in Dulwich. The children and teacher suffered fractured limbs, cuts, and concussion when tables and chairs fell from the attic above. The trust pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations.
- A Health and Safety Executive investigation found that the collapse was caused by items such as desks and chairs being stored in an area in the attic that was not designed to bear weight. The trust failed to undertake any assessments of the area's structural or load-bearing capabilities.
- HSE inspector Samuel Brown emphasized the importance of ensuring children's safety in schools and the severe consequences of failing to do so. The Thurlow Educational Trust expressed regret and has taken steps to improve its health and safety arrangements since the incident.
