Duke uses trick-play TD pass from Nate Sheppard to pull out 19-16 victory over Virginia
Nate Sheppard’s 28-yard touchdown pass with 1:14 left ended Duke’s two-game skid and handed Virginia its first home loss of the season.
On Friday, Duke running back Nate Sheppard threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brody Keefe with 1:14 remaining, giving the Blue Devils a 19-16 victory at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.
The Blue Devils snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory, keeping their Atlantic Coast Conference title game hopes alive despite struggling offensively and defensively throughout the contest.
Quarterback Walker Eget led the offense with 211 passing yards, while ACC rushing leader Nate Sheppard was held to just 55 yards on 15 carries, forcing Duke to rely on the trick play.
Rushing for 117 yards with a touchdown, Virginia running back Jekail Middlebrook and kicker Will Bettridge's three field goals kept the Cavaliers competitive despite the late-game collapse.
Patrick Smith-Young sealed the win with a fourth-down interception, and Duke now hosts Boston College on October 31, while Virginia travels to Wake Forest the same day.
