Sophomore Forward Collin Murray-Boyles Evolving for Larger Role on Toronto Raptors
Murray-Boyles averaged 14.4 points in the playoffs against Cleveland as Toronto leaned on him more with its frontcourt depth thin.
Murray-Boyles is stepping into an expanded role as the backup centre and second option at power forward behind all-star Scottie Barnes and starting centre Jakob Poeltl, with heightened expectations for the Raptors this season.
A breakout postseason against Cleveland earned him this opportunity; his usage jumped from 21.9 to 27.3 minutes per game, with playoff averages of 14.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
In over 20 minutes of play Wednesday, Murray-Boyles recorded six points, eight rebounds, and three assists in Toronto's 135-92 home-opening win over the Chicago Bulls.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic emphasized that Murray-Boyles must maintain defensive aggressiveness, stating, "When he does that on the defensive end, it translates to every part of his game."
With heightened expectations, Murray-Boyles said the team has been "locked in this whole summer" to surpass last year's performance and maintain focus throughout the long season.
