DHS designates Jan. 6 a National Special Security Event
- The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, designated the January 6, 2025, certification process as a National Special Security Event at the request of Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser.
- The security designation applies to major events requiring extensive security measures, similar to the Super Bowl and presidential inaugurations.
- The U.S. Secret Service stated they will coordinate an integrated security plan for the event and draw on recommendations from congressional reports related to the January 6, 2021, attack.
