BlackRock Joins DTCC's $114T Tokenization Push for Stocks and Treasurys
The pilot will test live blockchain transactions and aims to show tokenized assets can preserve liquidity and investor protections inside existing market infrastructure.
- On Wednesday, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation launched a tokenization pilot with more than 25 firms, including JPMorgan and BlackRock, testing digital versions of assets like the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF within existing clearing infrastructure.
- The DTCC, which safeguards about $114 trillion in assets, initiated this trial to bridge TradFi and DeFi, modernizing legacy infrastructure that processed $4.7 quadrillion in securities transactions last year.
- Participating firms are testing collateral, repo, and equity trades using tokenized Microsoft shares, Circle, State Street SPDR, and 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF, maintaining liquidity and investor protections within the current custody framework.
- Nadine Chakar, Global Head of DTCC Digital Assets, said the trial proves "the old and the new can live together," with the organization targeting a scalable operational launch this October.
- Stellar and the Canton Network will support the DTCC's multi-chain strategy by 2027, while the United Kingdom's Treasury advances a separate £33 billion tokenization initiative through its Wholesale Digital Markets Taskforce.
