Drought deepens in Eastern Canada as West sees some improvement: monitor
About 71% of Canada faced drought or abnormal dryness by August, causing water shortages, crop losses, and wildfires in Eastern regions, with conservation efforts underway.
- On Aug. 11, 2025, The Canadian Press reported officials say a deepening drought in Central and Atlantic Canada is creating water supply issues, with the national drought outlook showing extreme drought in Atlantic Canada and moderate to severe drought in Ontario and Quebec.
- Scientists attribute the worsening drought to climate change driven by burning fossil fuels, while Trevor Hadwen, agri-climate specialist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, said last month was one of Atlantic Canada's driest, causing major crop losses.
- The national drought monitor shows about 71 per cent of the country faced dry or drought conditions, with Ontario and Quebec's 84 per cent of agricultural land affected and Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley recording less than 15 millimetres of rain.
- Authorities asked households in municipalities including Trent Hills, Marmora and North Kawartha to cut water use by 30 per cent, following a Level 3 low water response declaration.
- The fall forecast does not bode well for Atlantic Canada, as experts expect drought concerns to persist there and in Central Canada, while Western Canada shows general improvement with mixed results in British Columbia.
