Driver Murdered Cyclist by Dragging Him for Mile Under Car
Jurors found Richardson knew the cyclist was trapped under his Volvo and kept driving, prosecutors said, before he was sentenced for murder on Monday.
On Friday, a jury at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court found Simon Richardson, 35, guilty of murdering headteacher Michael Mullins after deliberating for 10 hours and 55 minutes following a two-week trial.
Richardson struck Mullins, 56, while cycling home from Stretford Grammar School in Greater Manchester on April 20, trapping him beneath a Volvo XC90. Instead of stopping, Richardson fled at more than 60mph with Mullins still underneath.
Evidence revealed Richardson drove 1.3 miles to a secluded track in Wet Gate Lane, Lymm, where he twice attempted to pull Mullins free. His passenger, Gabrielle Debotte, testified they heard "moaning" before Richardson said, "He's under the car."
Richardson will be sentenced on Monday, when Mrs Justice Brunner will impose a life sentence. Detective Chief Inspector Louise Edwards said the family should be "proud of the courage they have shown" during the distressing trial.
Mrs Justice Brunner discharged jurors from service for 10 years, telling them, "This was, I know, an upsetting case and there was evidence which you may have found distressing." She emphasized to Richardson that life imprisonment is the only sentence for murder.
