Driver attempting to set a record at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats dies after losing control
BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, UTAH, AUG 4 – Chris Raschke, 60, died after losing control near the 2.5-mile mark during a record attempt at Speed Week, organizers said. Investigations into the cause are ongoing.
- During the Speed Week event at Bonneville Salt Flats, Chris Raschke, 60-year-old driver, died Sunday afternoon while attempting a land speed record, the Southern California Timing Association confirmed.
- Race director Keith Pedersen said Raschke was clocked at nearly 280 mph before he lost control near the 2.5 mile mark around 3:30 p.m. during his record attempt.
- Emergency responders and medical professionals treated Raschke at the crash site, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
- The SCTA and Tooele County Sheriff’s Office are investigating, and race director Keith Pedersen confirmed Speed Week will resume Monday at the Bonneville Salt Flats International Raceway.
- The Bonneville Salt Flats hosts two major racing events annually, with Speed Week in August attracting around 500 hot rods, roadsters and motorcycles, and the World Finals in September.
