Draw with the Dutch Keeps Underdog Greece Ahead of Favorites in the Nations League
On Thursday, Greece held the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in Thessaloniki, with Fotis Ioannidis and Giorgos Masouras scoring before the Dutch rallied late in the UEFA Nations League match.
Greece remains the surprise Nations League group leader following a strategic overhaul of domestic soccer leagues designed to foster youth talent, recently securing away victories over Serbia and Germany.
After Greece established a two-goal lead, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk criticized his team's first-half performance as "unacceptable," noting they lost possession "far too quickly" before his 59th-minute header sparked the comeback.
Former Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders struck in the 89th minute to rescue the draw, frustrating a Greek squad that matched the visitors' pace at Toumba Stadium throughout the contest.
Despite the late equalizer, Greece defender Kostas Tsimikas said the team must "be humble and recognize that we played against a superpower," aiming to build on this result moving forward.
SportGreece remains undefeated in the German Nations League group. However, in the duel with the Netherlands, the Southern Europeans give a 2-0 out of their hands.
Before the match, national coach Xavi Hernández warned against the Greeks, the surprising group leaders after two victories. But for large parts of the game, the Dutch played lacklusterly and complacently. Only just before the end did the Netherlands avoid defeat: 2-2.
