Since the time of President Ronald Reagan, the American right has been characterized by several principles: the belief in reducing government intervention in the economy, allowing capitalism to flourish, reducing the functions of the federal government, maintaining a strong defense apparatus, strengthening state power, and (during the Cold War) resisting communism with all its might.
