Dordt University to build stormwater pond with state water quality investment
The state grant will help the university build a pond that reduces runoff, erosion and flooding while improving water quality and serving campus uses.
- On Wednesday, Dordt University announced it will receive $430,000 from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to construct a stormwater pond in Sioux Center to minimize peak flows and erosion.
- Sioux Center was one of four communities selected for this year's first round of urban water quality projects, with the state investing $1.24 million total across these selected sites.
- The new stormwater pond will serve as an educational tool and recreational area while supporting local biodiversity and improving water quality for students and the broader community.
- Vice President of Operations Fred Verwoerd said the project meets infrastructure needs while "creating something that contributes positively to the campus environment" rather than simply installing a detention basin.
- Belle Plaine, Hiawatha, and Humboldt also received state funding for water quality projects, sharing the $1.24 million total investment as part of the statewide initiative's first round.
