- Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the Grateful Dead singer, died Sunday at Alive Hospice in Nashville after a lengthy battle with cancer at age 78.
 - Born Aug. 22, 1947 in Florence, Alabama, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay began as a Muscle Shoals Studios session singer and married pianist Keith Godchaux after moving to California.
 - She appeared on six Grateful Dead studio albums and debuted with the group on the Europe '72 live release, taking lead and co-writing songs like `Sunrise` and earning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.
 - Her family requested privacy at this time of grieving and said no memorial service information has been announced; she is survived by husband David MacKay, sons Zion "Rock" Godchaux and Kinsman MacKay, grandson Delta, sister Gogi Clark, and brother Ivan Thatcher.
 - In recent years, Godchaux-MacKay performed with Grateful Dead members and Dead & Company, including at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival on June 12, 2016; her death follows founding Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, age 84.
