DOJ secures indictment of 17 Iranians accused of ‘massive’ cyber theft campaign
The case now includes 17 defendants accused of stealing more than 31 terabytes of research and selling it to Iranian clients, prosecutors said.
- On Aug 18, The Justice Department charged eight Iranians linked to the Mabna Institute for allegedly conducting a multi-year campaign to steal research from American universities, companies, and government agencies.
- Backed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Mabna Institute allegedly targeted more than 100,000 professor accounts since at least 2013 as part of a state-sponsored effort to gather intelligence.
- Hackers successfully penetrated roughly 8,000 professor email accounts, costing American universities $3.4 billion to "procure and access," while targeting the Labor Department and other federal agencies.
- The State Department Rewards program announced a $10 million reward for information on the suspects, bringing the total number of individuals charged in the broader scheme to Seventeen.
- Amid ongoing US-Iran tensions, The Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations did not respond to requests for comment, highlighting the state-sponsored cyber threat landscape.
