Dodge County Town Board Chairman Arrested for Mistreating Animals After Death of Dog
TOWN OF CHESTER, DODGE COUNTY, WISCONSIN, JUN 20 – Richard Van Buren faces felony charges after using a leash as a choke collar that caused a stray golden retriever's death, with bond set at $5,000 and court hearings scheduled.
Richard Van Buren, who leads the Chester Town Board, was taken into custody on June 19 in Dodge County following an incident on June 17 near Oakwood Road that led to the death of a stray golden retriever.
The incident occurred after Van Buren used a leash fashioned into a choke collar, which he admitted was too tight for too long and led to the dog's death, and a woman had brought the dog to his home to be kenneled.
Van Buren reportedly lifted the dog by the leash suspending it twice despite pleas to stop, and he said, "No, this f****** dog bit me!" after the dog bit him and drew blood, causing his finger to bleed.
At his virtual court appearance on June 20, Van Buren was charged with felony mistreatment of animals, received a $5,000 signature bond, and was barred from owning dogs, with a judge ordering him to rehome his two dogs promptly.
The case remains under investigation with no further information released pending court documents, while authorities stress decisions are based on evidence, not public pressure, and note the need for better animal care education.
