Surgeon Who Bought Genital Mutilation Videos and Froze Off His Own Legs Struck Off
The tribunal said his conduct and fraud convictions showed a lack of insight, and it imposed an immediate erasure order.
On Friday, May 29, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service struck vascular surgeon Neil Hopper off the General Medical Council register following a hearing into his convictions for insurance fraud and possession of extreme pornographic images.
Hopper previously admitted to self-inflicting irreversible leg damage using dry ice in April 2019, then swindled insurance companies by falsely claiming the amputations resulted from life-threatening illness rather than self-inflicted injury.
Investigations revealed Hopper accessed the EunuchMaker website run by convicted criminal Marius Gustavson, exchanging messages expressing sexual gratification from viewing mutilation content while fraudulently obtaining £466,653.81 from two insurers.
The tribunal determined Hopper's "behaviours leading to his convictions demonstrated a blatant disregard of all standards expected," finding he posed an extremely high risk to public protection with no demonstrable insight or remedial behaviour.
Gustavson, who led the extreme body modification ring, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024 with a minimum 22-year term at the Old Bailey for carrying out procedures on people as young as 16.
