‘Do not use’: Dollarama recalls popular kitchen item over ‘microbial contamination’
The CFIA classified the recall as Class 2, warning the 70-gram product may cause short-term, non-life-threatening health problems.
On Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced a recall of Heavenly Spices Garlic Powder sold at Dollarama locations Canada-wide due to microbial contamination from Bacillus cereus.
Bacillus cereus, which the B.C. Centre for Disease Control says 'is widespread in the environment and commonly found in the soil,' prompted the CFIA to issue a Class 2 recall indicating moderate health risk.
Sold in stores and online, the recalled 70-gram Garlic Powder carries universal product code 6 67888 50634 7 and codes BB: 2029 JAN 30 GP 30ZV PIT for consumer identification.
Symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting can last for six to 24 hours; while most cases resolve within one or two days, the Government of Canada urges consumers not to use the product.
Recently, the CFIA issued a separate recall for various ground spices from Salem Foods due to undeclared wheat, sesame, and mustard, potentially affecting pantry stocks across Canada.
