Discrimination charge filed against Michigan salon after owner’s comments on gender identity
Traverse City hair salon, Salon 8 Hair Lab, is charged with discriminatory advertisement by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights for stating that individuals not identifying as men or women were unwelcome.
The salon owner, Christine Geiger, argued that her post is protected speech, but the department claims it violated the state's civil rights law. The department can pursue charges based solely on discriminatory advertisements.
The charge will be reviewed by an administrative law judge, who may recommend compensation for mental distress, attorney fees, possible licensing sanctions, and an extension of the goods at issue to the complainants.
