Discrepancy discovered between Mobile, FBI crime stats for city

There is an apparent discrepancy between the Police Department's tabulation of homicides and statistics compiled by the FBI. The FBI report also has much higher numbers for rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. The reason for the discrepancy is unclear. Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine said he suspects it is due to confusion over the FBI's new system.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said that the website MoneyGeek skewed FBI crime data by adding a dollar value to crime to determine the "most violent" cities in the U.S., of which Mobile was listed at No. 2 and Birmingham at No. 3.
