Spain Police Dismantle Gang Smuggling Cannabis to Ireland
IRELAND, AUG 7 – Spanish and Irish police arrested 14 suspects and seized nearly €100,000 in cash during raids linked to over three tonnes of marijuana smuggled over six years.
- On Thursday, Spanish National Police, working with An Garda Síochána and police in the UK, dismantled a suspected gang, arresting 14 in Spain and Ireland.
- A spokesman said the investigation, codenamed Operation Epicurean, began in January this year after British, Irish and Spanish nationals used international courier firms to smuggle marihuana inside animal feed pallets.
- Conducting coordinated raids, authorities seized cash, a gun, 11 vehicles and six designer watches worth more than EUROS 200,000 in Malaga, Madrid and Seville.
- At the same time, properties valued at more than EUROS two million were embargoed, and police also intervened to seize 300 kilos of marihuana.
- Highlighting cross-border cooperation, the operation involved support from Gardaí and NCA, with investigators estimating the network trafficked more than three tonnes of marihuana since 2019.
