Digital gold could triple by 2031, WGC estimates
A World Gold Council and Boston Consulting Group report says nearly nine in 10 retail investors would consider digital gold under the right conditions.
- The World Gold Council and Boston Consulting Group projected the digital gold market will reach $160 billion to $170 billion by 2031, growing at about 27% annually from an estimated $45 billion to $55 billion today.
- Researchers valued the current digital gold market at $45 billion to $55 billion, yet the report suggests total latent demand could reach $700 billion if adoption barriers around trust, access, utility and cost are removed.
- To unlock this potential, the World Gold Council is developing a shared infrastructure initiative designed to help issuers provide compliant digital gold products while addressing critical trust and access barriers that currently limit adoption.
- Digital gold acts as an entry point for new investors: 52% of current holders owned no gold previously, and 92% of those new buyers have since purchased other forms of gold, expanding the market.
- Beyond simple ownership, tokenized gold is being used for lending and yield-bearing assets; gold-backed borrowing on Aave reached a $25 million debt ceiling in August, while Paxos Labs introduced the PAXGy token for leasing returns.
