DIGHA, PURBA MEDINIPUR, WEST BENGAL, JUN 27 – The inaugural Rath Yatra attracted around 250,000 devotees including international visitors, with strict crowd control measures to ensure safety during the 1 km procession.
- On Friday, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, officially launched the inaugural Rath Yatra from the recently completed Jagannath Temple located in Digha.
- The festival followed a long-standing dispute over the temple's name and construction, with Banerjee addressing objections and emphasizing respect for both Digha and Puri temples.
- Thousands of devotees from over 50 countries, including Russia and the US, gathered along the one-kilometer procession route where the idols of Lord Jagannath and siblings were placed in chariots.
- Banerjee stated the three chariots would start at 2:30 pm and finish by 4 pm, and devotees would touch the ropes only from behind barricades to avoid chaos during the event.
- The event indicates rising religious tourism in Digha, with an expected higher turnout next year and daily visits continuing till the 'Ulto Rath' on July 4, 2025.
