Gautam Gambhir Jumps to Sai Sudharsan's Defence Before Afghanistan Test: 'He Needs to Get a Fair Chance'
Gambhir said Sudharsan has earned a longer run after scoring 722 IPL runs at a 157.98 strike rate.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed on Friday that Sai Sudharsan will bat at No. 3 for the Afghanistan Test in New Chandigarh, starting Saturday.
Gambhir emphasized Sudharsan deserves a fair run, citing his challenging start in England and a standout Indian Premier League season where he scored 722 runs in 17 innings.
While Devdutt Padikkal remains a strong candidate following his 532-run haul in the Ranji Trophy, Gambhir stated he must wait, explaining, "You can only pick 11."
Gambhir also backed Rishabh Pant, clarifying the team expects him to play his natural game while assessing match situations and adapting accordingly.
Either Manav Suthar or Harsh Dubey will debut against Afghanistan, though Gambhir assured Ravindra Jadeja remains integral as the team tests a fourth spinner before Sri Lanka.
