For decades he was the isolationist and paranoid leader of the Albanian regime, one of the most oppressive in history: he died 40 years ago

Albania's leader Enver Hoxha was the Stalinist dictator with the longest term of office. He died 40 years ago, on April 11, 1985. Today he appears to the most in the country as someone from a distant past.

Instead of building residential buildings, Hoxha built bunkers all over the country. Traces of these are still visible today.
