UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK, JUL 21 – Ishaq Dar urged urgent debt relief and global financial reforms to help developing nations overcome pandemic setbacks and climate challenges, noting only 35% of SDGs are on track globally.
- On July 21, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar addressed the high-level political forum, calling for debt relief and grant-based resources for developing nations.
- Amid deepening global crises, Dar said the combined effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, food, fuel, and financial crises, and accelerating climate change have undermined development progress, highlighting that only 35% of the SDGs are on track with five years to go.
- Dar said national social protection initiatives include the Benazir Income Support Programme, Benazir Nashonuma, the Digital Youth Hub and Danish Schools, while the Special Investment Facilitation Council attracts foreign investment in priority sectors.
- Both UN chief Antonio Guterres and UNGA President Philemon Yang welcomed Pakistan’s engagement, endorsing its active Security Council presence and commitment to peace and inclusivity.
- Dar called for strengthening global governance and reforming the UN to meet member expectations, noting the UN’s 80th anniversary as an opportunity to renew commitment to the SDGs.
