RoboCop Statue Installed in Detroit After Nearly 15 Years

The 11-foot, 3,500-pound bronze statue was funded by over 2,700 Kickstarter backers and installed after nearly 15 years of planning and legal challenges.

  • On Dec. 3, 2025, the 3,500-pound RoboCop bronze statue was erected atop a 1,500-pound base outside 3434 Russell St., Eastern Market, Detroit.
  • The campaign began with a viral tweet asking then-Mayor Dave Bing for a RoboCop statue, inspiring a 2012 Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $67,000 from more than 2,700 backers led by Brandon Walley, filmmaker and Imagination Station board president.
  • Using a crane and hi-lo crews, RoboCop was positioned atop vertical rods in less than four hours, after being 3-D scanned on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
  • Jim Toscano noted, `It was basically a snowstorm, freezing cold, and we still had a steady stream of people lining up to check it out.` Local visitors immediately welcomed the statue despite the weather, and organizers plan a post-winter celebration inviting Peter Weller.
  • Legal and funding setbacks delayed the project for years, MGM Studios owns the intellectual property and required placement by end of 2025, and Eastern Market said the overall tab is approaching $260,000.
