Detroit's Air Quality on Thursday Ranked as Hazardous, Worst in the World
Detroit air quality reached hazardous levels as smoke from hundreds of wildfires pushed fine particulate pollution well above very unhealthy readings.
- On Thursday, Detroit registered the worst air quality of any city globally, according to monitoring company IQAir, with a pollutant index of 600—twice the EPA's hazardous threshold—as U.S. Air Quality Index readings exceeded 800 in metro Detroit.
- Smoke from hundreds of Canadian and Minnesota wildfires crossed into Northern Michigan on Wednesday, with roughly 2.4 million hectares burned in Canada and 858 fires burning, including 111 considered out of control.
- EGLE reported Thursday morning readings were the highest since at least 2023, with visible haze containing microscopic particles and chemicals including sulfur and nitrogen oxides, according to Dr. Shelley L. Schmidt, a pulmonary physician with Corewell Health.
- Emergency responders fielded a spike in 911 calls while several dozen assembly line workers at Ford Motor's Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne were hospitalized due to smoke and heat ranging from 88 to 100 degrees; Wayne County distributed more than 70,000 KN95 masks to senior facilities.
- A cold front moving through Friday is expected to push smoke out by the weekend, though officials extended the air quality alert through July 17; studies have linked wildfire smoke exposure to heart attacks, strokes, cancer and weakened immune defenses.
